Dividing Lines

Cities apart, we listen quietly to raindrops on your window
To the sound of rolling thunder amid the glow of lightning
Tonight, distance becomes our dividing line
Fighting sleep through whispers on a phone

When the space between us can be measured
In inches and no longer miles
We will look fondly at tonight
When we dreamed of our nights in paradise

On quiet nights we will ask for rain
To be reminiscent of our lives on earth
A petrichor lulling us to sleep
Under the boughs of a willow tree

On loud nights we will ask for laughter
To fill the spaces between our conversations
Our happiness soaring to new heights
In a gathering blessed with twinkling lights

On clear nights we will ask for a sky full of stars
To hold all the galaxies I saw reflected in your eyes
Counting constellations that we loved
On a bed built of glittering stardust

My nights begin and end with you
In lush gardens and promises of eternity
As we look affectionately at tonight
When we dreamed of our nights in paradise

I’ll fall asleep to raindrops on your window
To the sound of rolling thunder amid the glow of lightning
Just for tonight, distance is our dividing line
In sleep, my soul will stray to find yours

“And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. And He has placed between you compassion and mercy. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect.” (Quran, 30:21)

  1. Positively ethereal and evocative. “In inches and no longer miles”—what a perfect way to capture a long-distance potential turned into the final proximity. May Allah ﷻ bless you!
