One Way

A lot of people have exams coming up. During one of my Arabic Classes, one student asked the teacher to cancel next week’s class because of she needed to study to get a perfect grade. When we want something, like an A on our exam, or a new electronic, or to win in this competition, we always have a plan to help us make our way towards that goal. We might study, work to raise money, practice and so on. We know for a fact that sitting around and dreaming about that goal without actually putting in some kind of work will never get us to there.

As Muslims we all pretty much have the same ultimate goal; to get to the highest level of Paradise, Al-Firdaus.

We attend a lecture or Friday Khutbah where the Imam speaks about Jannah and all the pleasure that are there from gardens to jewerly, from milk to wine, from the Hoor Al-Ayn to beautiful servants. Sure we all hope and dream about all this. And at the end of the Khutbah when the Imam asks Allah to grant us  Jannah everyone says ‘Ameen’

But my question is, what are you going to do to get there? When it comes to things in this life, we all agree that no pain is no gain, ie. if you don’t work to get to your goal, if you don’t take those steps no matter how big or small they are, you’ll never get there. Our goal to get to Jannah should not be any different. In fact, it should be number one on our list.

Anas said that a man came to the Prophet and asked, “When will the Last Hour come, Oh Messenger of Allah?” He (the Prophet) asked, “What have you prepared for it?”

Ask yourself, What have I prepared to it? Everyone is different, and everyone progresses at different levels. Some of us are further ahead on this path than others. But the important thing is that we stay on this path and keep going forward not back. I remember my teacher used to tell us that in life we’re driving our cars on a one way street, and unless you pull to the side and give up, the only way you can go is forward. So take out your map and follow the directions. Take out your Qur’an and follow the Sunnah.
