The Grass is Greener

We want what we don’t have

The more we have, the more we want,

The grass is always greener

on the other side

These feelings are innate to human nature

The feeling of always wanting more, the inclination that it’s never enough

It’s placed inside us, that ache to achieve, to always look ahead and to always believe

But we take these as feelings for the material,

Chasing after the latest gadgets, the newest trends, the best deals –

We always want more

so we fill ourselves with riches,

succumb to petty desires

And that attribute that was given to us – to accomplish and persevere

is lost

And in it we lose ourselves

I can’t help but wonder whether the thirst for more was given to us on purpose

So that we foster it towards something greater

And not just to these worldly wants

Because while we continue to reach for things our hands can touch

We forget the things our eyes cannot see

Or the things our minds cannot perceive

We forget that this longing is for something not in this life

But for a promised place beyond,

the one that we cannot reach,

until our end.

A place where everything is better

And the grass is, in fact, greener

A place with gardens,

with rivers flowing beneath them.

Rivers of milk, of wine, of honey

Where we will recline on thrones raised high.

Shaded by trees whose branches extend one hundred years,

feasting on fruits of all kinds

Clothed in silk,

Surrounded by the most blessed of company,

Where laughter and joy replaces confusion and misery,

Where homes of brick are replaced with gold and silver –

in which therein, we will abide forever.

This is brilliant. A very nice reminder.
